People’s need for psychological support increased significantly during the economic crisis in the country and intensified during the pandemic years. But this great science also exerts a great fascination on the new generation which seeks, through Panhellenic 2023, their position in the labor market. Studies in the sciences of psychology are in high demand and graduates now have many options for professional reintegration apart from the “classic” solution of a freelancer who provides psychological support to citizens with his own office.
In our country, there are six departments of psychology, which belong exclusively to the 1st scientific field.
In concrete terms, these departments operate, at National Kapodistrian University (EKPA), Panteio, Aristotle University (APTh.), University of Crete in Rethymno, University of Ioannina and University of Western Macedonia, Florina. This year, by decision of the Ministry of Education, the above departments are strengthened by an additional department that will operate at the Democritus University of Thrace, which will welcome the first students from the 2024-2025 academic year and will be based in Didymoteicho. The mission of the Department of Psychology is the thorough theoretical training of students in the most important branches of psychology, their familiarization with the basic principles and methods of psychological research, the development of their skills for the understanding and interpretation of human behavior, as well as the development and promotion of the science of psychology nationally and internationally. The Department of Psychology can organize undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate study programs. The first cycle of studies is structured in eight (8) academic semesters. In the Department of Psychology, eight (8) positions are recommended for research teaching staff (DEP). Until the positions in the first paragraph are filled, the pedagogical needs of the Department of Psychology are met by members of the Faculty of Education, special education staff and teaching staff from the laboratories of the other departments of the Faculty of Education. with a subject identical to or related to the scientific field of the Department.

Graduates acquiring a specific specialization can be absorbed into many disciplines such as clinical psychology and health psychology, cognitive, evolutionary, social, organizational, personality and school psychology. They have the possibility of being employed on the one hand as freelancers with their own psychological counseling office and on the other hand because of their wide scope of action to work in hospitals, clinics, centers of mental health, prisons, retirement homes, social care structures, in addiction centers, etc. Additionally, with an appropriate combination of education, they can advance professionally into other fields such as marketing, sports, and neuroscience.
